Research

Yoriko's academic research examines cross-cultural histories of global governance, focusing on animals and commodities. She has written and edited key publications in human-animal studies, including 'Law and the Question of the Animal' (with Edward Mussawir), and 'Making Milk' (with Mathilde Cohen). Her latest monograph, 'Unconditional Life: The International Law Settlement' was published by Oxford University Press. She is currently working on two collaborative book projects, and is happy to be contacted by fellow scholars, publishers, and the press.

Her most recent artistic collaboration (using her work on animals) was with the duo Ben and Sebastian, whose work 'Silent Parties' at the Court of Aarhus received a national award (Snedkerprisen 2021). It is currently on tour.

The End of the City and the Last Man: Urban Animals and the Law

"If we begin to think about law and the absence of urban animals, or of law and the urban and the absence of animals, or even of the law and its production of lawful animals, we are overwhelmed by the evidence of what John Berger calls ‘the loneliness of man as a species'."
